Have you ever seen anyone suffer from becoming suddenly paralyzed? It’s a horrible thought, but inexplicable neurological injuries happen perhaps more often than you might think. About a month ago our awesome new employee Alec came to work with the sad news his 3 year old, 90 pound, previously extremely healthy mixed breed dog, had been out visiting the goats as usual, when he began screaming in pain and was suddenly completely unable to walk. They rushed him “down the hill” to an emergency vet in Denver, who gave them medications and suggested a $7,000 MRI to diagnose the cause. When Alec came back to work, he was worried and discouraged about not only Sylvester and his prognosis, but also how the family could afford what the neurologist suggested.
Up to this point, this beautiful young, vibrant dog, would have zero response of any kind in the back half of his body. In fact, the family had already purchased for him a doggy wheelchair (interestingly paid for by pet insurance), as it seemed likely Sylvester may never be able to walk again.
As a team, we of course all immediately encouraged him to try acupuncture, as over the years we have seen nothing short of miracles for cases just like this one. They agreed, and with great difficulty they carried poor, sweet, giant Sylvester into the hospital for his first acupuncture treatment six days after the initial incident.
Since then, Alec reports that Sylvester has made a dramatic improvement about every 3 days after his acupuncture, and now, 4 treatments later, I am so pleased to report that Sylvester has regained almost 90% use of his hind legs, can walk on his own again, and only still needs a little help with a stubborn left hind paw which just still has some recovering to do, but it’s only been a month! No expensive MRI needed to get this big beautiful boy back on 4 feet (paws)!
Since then we also had a life long dachshund breeder bring us a little puppy who is having difficulty with his long back and losing some nerve function. She swears by acupuncture and tells everyone she would never do surgery on a dog, as in her experience, acupuncture has corrected every one of them! That little pup is also doing great!
Not sure what is going on in the world, but recently we have seen a slew of unusual neurological disturbances like these, one of my own cats had a stroke (he is only 6, he is mostly recovered now), and today in the hospital we have already seen two dogs with similar neurological abnormalities. I am not sure if it’s the extreme solar flares, the full moon, or just bad luck, but the good news is we have the amazing tool of acupuncture and herbs to help these animals recover without costly surgery. So the next time your pet has such an issue (or someone you know), remember to tell them it may not be as hopeless as it seems, and give acupuncture a try! And it also helps with arthritis, allergies, chronic digestive disorders, and general immune support. We are so grateful for this tool!
In ResqRanch news, our newest addition, the 28 year old Arabian mare Dixie, is settling into the herd and is thriving. We are doing lot’s of positive reinforcement training with her, to make it easier for us to handle her, especially with haltering, leading, general daily care, and training to tolerate a horse blanket. I am making videos of her progress, along with updates about the improvements we have done this year on the property, which will allow students to have a better learning experience here, visitors to be more fully able to enjoy the property, and to improve the quality of life of the rescues in our care. In fact, big news! We received our first $15,000 grant through Jefferson county for our Veterans Pathways project, and the hospital was named a favorite on NextDoor!
